Sidney W was born in December 1922 in Farnham, Surrey. Sidney W's father was George Theodore Cookson and his mother was Alice Maud Putterill. His paternal grandparents were Charles Frederick Cookson and Constance Emily Gillett; his maternal grandparents were James Putterill and Alice Green. He had five brothers named James Frederick, George Edward, Albert Theodore, Kathleen E M and Frank. He is the second youngest of the six children.-
