Robert was born in 1840 in Dunse, Berwickshire, Scotland. Robert's father was Thomas Christison and his mother was Magdalene Sleight ?. He had three brothers and four sisters, named William, Thomas, John, Margaret, Alice, Agnes and Mary.  He was the second youngest of the eight children.
