John was born in 1831 in Dunse, Berwickshire, Scotland. John's father was Thomas Christison and his mother was Magdalene Sleight ?. He had three brothers and four sisters, named William, Thomas, Robert, Margaret, Alice, Agnes and Mary.  He was the fourth oldest of the eight children.
