Margaret was born about 1821 in Eyemouth, Berwickshire, Scotland. Margaret's father was Thomas Christison and her mother was Magdalene Sleight ?. She had four brothers and three sisters, named William, Thomas, John, Robert, Alice, Agnes and Mary.  She was the oldest of the eight children.
