Agnes was born in 1838 in Dunse, Berwickshire, Scotland. Agnes' father was Thomas Christison and her mother was Magdalene Sleight ?. She had four brothers and three sisters, named William, Thomas, John, Robert, Margaret, Alice and Mary.  She was the third youngest of the eight children.
