Mary was born about 1843 in Dunse, Berwickshire, Scotland. Mary's father was Thomas Christison and her mother was Magdalene Sleight ?. She had four brothers and three sisters, named William, Thomas, John, Robert, Margaret, Alice and Agnes.  She was the youngest of the eight children.
