Mary was born on November 1st, 1845 in Pine Court (no 20), Leeds, Yorkshire.1 Mary's father was John Smith and her mother was Elizabeth Booth. Her paternal grandparents were Richard Smith and Mary; her maternal grandparents were Joseph Booth and Elizabeth Hargrave. She had a brother and three sisters, named Charles, Sarah, Louisa and Betty. She was the second oldest of the five children.-
