John was born in 1884 in Newport Pagnall, Buckinghamshire. John's father was Thomas MOSELEY and his mother was Hannah BRITTEN. He had six brothers and five sisters, named Thomas, William, Walter, Arthur, Sidney, Joe, Elizabeth, Ellen, Ada, Jessie and Minnie.  He was the fifth youngest of the twelve children.
