Alan was born in 1320.  Alan's father was Robert de Holland and his mother was Maud De La Zouche.  His paternal grandparents were Sir Robert de Holland and Elizabeth de Samlesbury. He had four brothers and eight sisters, named Robert, Thomas, Otho, John, Joane, Margery, Maud, Elizabeth, Margaret, Jane, Eleanor and Elizabeth.  He was the eighth oldest of the thirteen children.  He died at the age of 19 in 1339.
