John's father was James Cole Jr and his mother was Mary Rentfroe. His paternal grandfather was James Cole Sr and his paternal grandmother is J. (Cole); his maternal grandparents were James Rentfroe and Ester Van Bibber. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Stephen, James, Solomon, Mark, William, Mary, Sarah and Susanna. He was the oldest of the nine children. He died about 1812 in Coles Creek, Natchez District, Jefferson County, Mississippi.
