Janet was born on April 12th, 1829 in Livingston, West Lothian, Scotland. Janet's father was James Young and her mother was Georgina Orrack. Her paternal grandparents were James Young and Katherine Alexander; her maternal grandparents were Robert Orrack and Janet Laurie. She had five brothers and a sister, named Robert, James, John, George, Alexander and Agnes. She was the youngest of the seven children.-
