Alexander was born on February 26th, 1826 in Livingston, West Lothian, Scotland. Alexander's father was James Young and his mother was Georgina Orrack. His paternal grandparents were James Young and Katherine Alexander; his maternal grandparents were Robert Orrack and Janet Laurie. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Robert, James, John, George, Agnes and Janet. He was the second youngest of the seven children.-
