George was born on May 11th, 1823 in Livingston, West Lothian, Scotland. George's father was James Young and his mother was Georgina Orrack. His paternal grandparents were James Young and Katherine Alexander; his maternal grandparents were Robert Orrack and Janet Laurie. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Robert, James, John, Alexander, Agnes and Janet. He was the third youngest of the seven children.-
