- Headstone reads: Erected by Alexander Hardie in memory of his father William Hardie who died 3 April 1898 aged 83 years. Also of his son Robert who died 1 July 1907 aged 19 1/2 Mary Hardie who died 8 Nov 1915 aged 42 years. Greatly loved and sadly missed.
At the bottom of the Headstone there is also a poem called 'The Sleep'
And friends dear friends, when it shall be that this low breath is come from me, and round my bier ye come to weep Let one, most loving of you all, Say not, a tear must o'er him fall, He giveth his beloved sleep

William was born on February 2nd, 1815 in
Ruthven, Angus, Scotland. William's father was
James Hardie and his mother was
Christian Thomson. His maternal grandparents were
James Thomson and
Kathryn Gibson. He had four brothers and four sisters, named
Patrick,
James,
Andrew,
John,
Isabella,
Margaret ,
Helen and
Jean. He was the fourth youngest of the nine children. He died due to natural causes or old age, Chronic Bronchitis, at the age of 83 on April 3rd, 1898. He was buried on April 6th, 1898 in
North Verge South West Division, Lair 11, Friockheim Cemetery, Angus, Scotland.
