Andrew was born on September 10th, 1816 in Haresburn, Rescobie, Angus, Scotland.  Andrew's father was James Hardie and his mother was Christian Thomson.  His maternal grandparents were James Thomson and Kathryn Gibson. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Patrick, James, William, John, Isabella, Margaret , Helen and Jean.  He was the third youngest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 65 on June 24th, 1882 in Forfar Poorhouse, Angus, Scotland.1
