Arthur was born on November 3rd, 1882 in Hokitika, Westland, NZ.  Arthur's father was William Robert Blane and his mother was Honorah Foley.  His paternal grandparents were William Blane and Elizabeth Cooke; his maternal grandparents were James Foley and Catherine (Kate) Lyston. He had three brothers and four sisters, named William, George, James, Elizabeth, Mary, Josephine and Catherine.  He was the second youngest of the eight children.  He died due to a medical problem, Meningitis A, at the age of 7 on May 27th, 1890 in St Mary's Orphanage, Stoke, NZ.
