He joined the Canterbury Constabluary Force November 1863. He was5'10" tall with fair complexion, light brown hair and blue eyes.
In 1866 William joined the United Grand Lodge of England, number 1241. Totara Lodge, Westcoast. 9 March 1865 he was stationed at Kaiapoi, Westland. 7 November 1866 transferred to Kaniere, Westland. 1867 - at Greenstone, Westland. 1873 William with another officer went to Haast to establish a station at Jackson's Bay, Westland where William was in charge till 1876.
1875 william was appointed Receiver of Gold of Okarito, Westland. Clerk of Resident Magistrate Court of Okarito.

1876 - appointed clerk of Magistrates Court in ross, Westland. Clerk of Licensing Courts for Districts of Totara, Town of Ross and Waitaha. Gold receiver of Ross.
1877 resigned. 1878 - appointed Registrar of BDM
1880 Appointed registrar of Electors.
1884 registrar of Mining of Ross.
