William de Braose, Lord of Abergavenny (ca. 1197 - May 2, 1230) was the son of Reginald de Braose. He succeeded his father in his various lordships in 1227, including Abergavenny and Builth. He was captured and imprisoned (as an act of retaliation) by Llywelyn the Great, ruler of most of Wales, in 1229, but was given relative freedom because he was related to the prince by marriage in several ways - his daughter, Isabella, was married to Llywelyn's only legitimate son. However, in the following year, Llywelyn is said to have discovered that his wife, Joan, had committed adultery with William, and had William hanged on May 2, 1230. Joan herself was later pardoned. Reginald de Braose supported his brother Giles in his rebellions against King John. They were both active against the King in the barons' war. Neither was present at the signing of Magna Carta because they were still rebels who refused to compromise. John acquiesced to Reginald's claims to the de Braose estates in Wales in May 1216. He became Lord of Brecon, Abergavenny, Builth and other Marcher Lordships but was very much a vassal of Llewelyn Fawr, Prince of Gwynedd and now his father-in-law. Henry III restored Reginald to favour and the Bramber estates (confiscated from William by K. John) in 1217. At this seeming betrayal, Rhys and Owain, Reginald's nephews who were princes of Deheubarth, were incensed and they took Builth (except the castle). Llywelyn Fawr also became angry and besieged Brecon. Reginald eventually surrendered to Llewelyn and gave up Seinhenydd (Swansea). By 1221 they were at war again with Llewelyn laying siege to Builth. The siege was relieved by Henry III's forces. From this time on Llewelyn tended to support the claims of Reginald's nephew John concerning the de Braose lands. Reginald was a witness to the re-issue of Magna Carta by Henry III in 1225.

Ralph Crophull is the first of a family of considerable antiquity, and he is mentioned with honor in the time of Edward II, when he had committed to him the counties of Nottingham and Derby, to farm the issue thereof, during the king's pleasure. Also in the ninth of the same reign 1316, he had custody of the counties of Salop and Stafford, with the Castle of Stafford committed to his care; and in the 12th Edward II, he was appointed escheater of this side of Trent. In first of Edward III he was possessed, along with Maud, his wife, of Bonyngton and Sutton on Co. Notts., with view of frank-pledge and other liberties, in said Townships.

# Note: John de Verdun, b. c 1226, d. 21 Oct 1274, son of Theobald le Boteler and Rohese de Verdun. [Magna Charta Sureties] # Note: # Note: Tenant-in-chief in Ireland. # Note: # Note: ------------------------------------ # Note: JOHN DE VERDUN, 2nd son of Theobald BUTLER, or LE BOTILLER (who died 19 July 1230, in Poitou), being 1st son by his 2nd wife, Rohese,[a] daughter and heir of Nicholas DE VERDUN, of Alton, Staffs, &c., was born about 1226. In May--June 1244 he was to be given his wife's share of the lands of her grandfather, Walter de Lacy, Lord of Meath; and on 3 May 1247 he was to have seizin of his mother's lands. He was granted protection, May 1248, to go to Ireland, which he visited many times during his life; was given quittance of common summons in many counties, during 1254-72, and was appointed one of the Justices in eyre for cos. Salop, Stafford, Warwick, Leicester and Lincoln, December 1259. He had further protections to go to Gascony, May 1253, and for service in Wales, August 1257, where he was Constable of the army which mustered at Chester; was ordered to defend the Marches against the Welsh in January 1259/60; and was summoned to London to aid the King, April 1260, and to Windsor, for the same reason, October 1263. Later in that year he was among the Royalists who promised to observe the award of Louis of France touching the Provisions of Oxford. During the conflict between Simon de Montfort and the Crown John followed the King. In August 1265, after the Royal victory at Evesham, he was Keeper of Odiharn Castle, Hants; in October following he wrote, with others, to report to the King the surrender of London; and in February 1265/6 he was appointed to protect Worcestershire from the attacks of the rebels in Kenilworth Castle. In August 1270 he accompanied the Lord Edward on his Crusade; and witnessed a charter granted by him in Sicily, 15 January 1270/1. He established the Franciscan priory at Dundalk, co. Louth. # Note: He married, 1stly, before 14 May 1244, Margery, 1st daughter of Gilbert DE LACY, of Ewyas Lacy, co. Hereford, by Isabel, daughter of Hugh (LE BIGOD), EARL OF NORFOLK, which Gilbert (who died v.p. between 12 August and 25 December 1230) was son and heir ap. of Walter de Lacy, Lord of Meath (who died s.p.m.s. shortly before 24 February 1240/1), to whom Margery was coheir. He married, 2ndly, before 1267, Eleanor (f). He is said to have died 21 October 1274. His widow was living, 10 June 1278. [Complete Peerage XII/2:246-8, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)] # Note: [a] Besides Alton her great inheritance in England and Ireland included Brandon Castle, co. Warwick, Belton, co. Leicester, and Farnham Royal, Bucks, which manor was held by the service of finding a glove for the King's hand on the day of his Coronation. # Note: (f) Presumably his son Humphrey, b. on the vigil of Pentecost 1267, was by the 2nd wife. Nothing is known of Eleanor's parentage but she may have been a Bohun. A seal, said to be hers, bears the Bohun and Verdun arms and the name of her son, Humphrey, may be significant. 7th Baron de Bohun He was the son of Humphrey de Bohun, by Eleanor de Braose, a daughter of William de Braose, Lord of Abergavenny and Eve Marshall. His mother died in 1251; his father died in 1265 of wounds sustained at the Battle of Evesham. He succeeded his grandfather, Humphrey de Bohun, 2nd Earl of Hereford, in 1275. The 3rd Earl was also the 2nd Earl of Essex, and held the positions of Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, and Constable of all England. Humphrey de Bohun took part in Roger Mortimer's war against the Welsh, and was present at the defeat at Cefnllys in November, 1262, by Llywelyn ap Gruffydd. He died at Pleshy Castle, in Essex. Humphrey de Bohun married Maud de Fiennes sometime between 1264 and July 17, 1275. Maud was born between 1236 and 1259, a daughter of Enguerrand II de Fiennes and Isabel de Conde. She died before 1347. Their son, another Humphrey de Bohun, succeeded him as the 8th Baron de Bohun and as Earl of Hereford. Humphrey de BohunVII is best remembered for refusing to serve in Gascony except in company of the king. Humphrey de Bohun took part in Roger Mortimer's war against the Welsh, and was present at the defeat at Cefnllys in November, 1262, by Llywelyn ap Gruffydd. He died at Pleshy Castle, in Essex. (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) Humphrey de Bohun succeeded his grandfather as Earl of Hereford and Essex, and Lord High Constable of England. This nobleman, inheriting the high and daring spirit of his predecessors, often strenuously opposed measures of the court, and was therefore often in disgrace, but he appears at the close of his career to have regained royal favour, for we find him attending the King into Scotland when that monarch, Edward I, obtained a great victory at Roxburgh. He married Maud, daughter of Sir Ingelram Fiennes, and, dying in 1297, was succeeded by his son, Humphrey. (Kin of Mellcene Thurman Smith, page 535)

William de Samlesbury, Roger's eldest son, increased his estates by marrying Avina daughter and heir of William de Notton, lord of Breightmet in the parish of Bolton-le-Moors, (fn. 9) by whom he had issue Margery, Cecily and Elizabeth. He died about 1256, his widow obtaining the manor of Breightmet in satisfaction of her dower. His eldest daughter Margery married first in or before 1257 Richard son and heir-apparent of William de Clifton, (fn. 11) who died shortly after his marriage, and secondly Robert de Hampton of Allonby, co. Cumb., and died without issue before July 1267; Cecily the second daughter married before 13 April 1259 John Deuyas; Elizabeth married after that date Robert de Holand son and heir of Thurstan de Holand. Robert de Hampton died in 1277, (fn. 13) but not until 1292 or 1296 was a partition of his third part of the manor made between Deuyas and Holand. (fn. 14) In 1311, at the death of the Earl of Lincoln, Dame Cecily Deuyas and Dame Elizabeth de Holand held a plough-land here in thegnage by the yearly service of 12s. --- Try "A History of the Ancient Hall of Samlesbury" by James Croston of London, England, published by Whittingham and Wilkins at the Chiswick Press, 1871?

# Note: Following excerpted from a posting to soc.genealogy.medieval newsgroup: From: Douglas Richardson (royalancestry@msn.com) Subject: Maud de Verdun, wife of John de Grey, 2nd Lord Grey of Wilton Newsgroups: soc.genealogy.medieval Date: 2002-02-13 22:42:27 PST I should add that when I first posted my discovery of the 1276/7 fine, I was of the impression that John and Maud de Grey were small children when the fine was recorded. I held this view because Complete Peerage stated that John was said to be aged 40 at the time of his father's death in 1308, or born about 1268. However, it now appears that that John was actually closer to age 50 in 1308, which is indicated by John's first appearance as an adult in the records in the late 1270's, as shown by Moor's Knights of Edward I. I have also since located the Grey pedigree in Blore's History of Rutland which states that John de Grey married Maud, daughter of John de Verdun. Since Blore never saw the fine below, it would appear he relied on another source for the marriage of John and Maud de Grey. best always, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah E-mail: royalancestry@msn.com
