Gilbert (Red Earl) de Clare (Gilbert of Gloucester de Clare) 
Gilbert, known as Red Earl, was born on September 2nd, 1243 in Christchurch, Hampshire, England.1 Red Earl's father was Earl of Gloucester Richard De Clare and his mother was Maud De Lacie. His paternal grandparents were Gilbert (The Surety) De Clare and Isobel Marshall; his maternal grandparents were Earl of Lincoln John (The Surety) De Lacy and Margaret De Quincy. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Bogo, Isabel, Margaret and Eglentine. He was the second oldest of the six children. He had two half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Piers, John, Roese and Eleanor. He died at the age of 52 on December 7th, 1295 in Monmouth Castle, Gwent, Wales. # Note: Gilbert, known as the "Red Earl", was the Earl of Hertford and Gloucester. Upon his fathers death he was made a ward of Humphry de Bohun, Earl of Hereford. In April of 1264, he led a massacre of Jews in Canterbury.

He joined the rebellion led by Simon Montfort. At the Battle of Lewes he took the King prisoner. Gilbert later became jealous of the growing power of Montfort and abandoned the Barons. He helped arrange the release of the King and the Prince and fought on their side at the Battle of Evesham. After the victory at Evesham, he received a full pardon from the King.

# Note: When King Henry died Gilbert was one of the first who proclaimed Prince Edward king. Upon Edward’s return from the Crusades, Gilbert met him and had a great feast in his honor.
