Richard M. was born on October 7th, 1853 in Rockingham Co, NC.1 Richard M.'s father was James Ellis Roberts and his mother was Jane Moore. His paternal grandparents were Martin Roberts and Elizabeth Gilliland. He had four brothers and four sisters, named James Henry, Samuel Ayers, William Franklin, Andrew Jackson, Margaret Malinda, Sarah M., Gillie Virginia and Susan Frances. He was the third oldest of the nine children. He had a half-brother and two half-sisters, named Walter, Ann Elizabeth and Mary Jane.1 General Notes
