John G. was born on June 4th, 1810 in Rockingham Co, NC.1 John G.'s father was Martin Roberts and his mother was Elizabeth Gilliland. His paternal grandparents were Naman Roberts and Mary A. G. Unknown. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Samuel, James Ellis, William, Martin Pinckey, Robert J., Sarah and Elizabeth. He was the second oldest of the eight children.1 General Notes
