Sir Thomas Overby 
Thomas was born on June 18th, 1581 in Compton-Scorpion, Warwickshire, England. Thomas' father was Sir Nicholas Overby and his mother was Mary Palmer. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Overbury Jr and Isabel Elizabeth Rutter; his maternal grandfather was Lord Giles Palmer. He had seven brothers and two sisters, named Frances, Meriall, Giles, Nicholas, Walter, John, William, Margaret and Mary. He was the second oldest of the ten children. He died at the age of 32 on September 15th, 1613 in The Tower of London, England.General Notes
He graduated Oxford in 1598 and later became attached to the court ofJames I. For opposing the marriage of his friend the ViscountRochester (ultimately Earl of Somerset) and the disreputable Countessof Essex, Overby was imprisoned in the Tower of London on April 26,1613. A victim of poisoning - he died Sept 15, 1613.
Sir Thomas wrote several short prose sketches called characters.Twenty-one of his characters were published posthumously in 1614 as anappendix to the second edition of his marital poem "A Wife". Althoughproceeded by Joseph Hall's "Characters of Virtues and Vices" in 1608,Overby's sketches were more influential in establishing the charactersextreme popularity. Pieces were later added by admiring imitators.Despite problems of authorship, the Overby collection is distinguishedby its satire and humor, and its alert observation of people.
