Thomas was born in 1834.1   Thomas' father was John Vanlaw and his mother was Sarah Spencer.  His paternal grandparents were Joseph Vanlaw and Mary Craft. He had a brother named Jesse.  He was the younger of the two children. He had four half-brothers and six half-sisters, named Jeptha S., Elisha, John, Samuel C., Mary, Louisa M., Lydia Sharp, Lucinda, Eliza and Ann S..1
