Elisha was born in 1816.1   Elisha's father was John Vanlaw and his mother was Sarah Sharp.  His paternal grandparents were Joseph Vanlaw and Mary Craft. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Jeptha S., John, Samuel C., Mary, Louisa M., Lydia Sharp, Lucinda and Eliza.  He was the third oldest of the nine children. He had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named Jesse, Thomas and Ann S..  He died at the age of 22 in 1838.1
