Jeptha S. was born in 1814.1   Jeptha S.'s father was John Vanlaw and his mother was Sarah Sharp.  His paternal grandparents were Joseph Vanlaw and Mary Craft. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Elisha, John, Samuel C., Mary, Louisa M., Lydia Sharp, Lucinda and Eliza.  He was the second oldest of the nine children. He had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named Jesse, Thomas and Ann S..  He died at the age of 28 in 1842.1
