Matthew was born on August 1st, 1815 in Butler, Wayne County, New York.  Matthew's father was William Henry Palmer and his mother was Mary Hughson.  His paternal grandparents were Matthew Palmer and Rebecca Unknown. He had two brothers and five sisters, named William Henry, Levi Henry, Ann Eliza, Mary, Amanda, Rebecca and Mahala.  He was the oldest of the eight children. He had a half-sister named Juliet.
