Marie Knapp married John Koning. John threw Marie against house and raped her. He was considered her boyfried. She became pregnant and he married her. He went to the drugstore and got medicine to end the pregnancy. The medicine he gave her "destroyed her body below the belt." She got so bad he took her to th hospital where she died.
Marie died in Holland May 23, 1918 just when the curfew whistle blew at 8:55 in the evening. To hear the whistle blow each day at 8:55 pm was too hard for mother Kate so the family moved back to Grand Rapids that summer. Johanna and Marinus were then working in Grand Rapids.
