His paternal grandparents were Robert Hamilton and Charlotte Ann Day; his maternal grandparents were Robert Turner and Mary Franklin Twin. He had two brothers and four sisters, named George Henry, Ernest, Mary Ellen, Alice Maude, Elizabeth Ann and Jane E.. He was the youngest of the seven children.
