James R was born in 1857 in East Dayton, Twp. Tuscola, Co. MI.1 James R's father was William Alexander Hamilton and his mother was Mary Ann Wells. His paternal grandparents were Robert Hamilton and Charlotte Ann Day; his maternal grandparents were James Wells and Elizabeth V. Buck. He had five brothers and a sister, named Andrew (Archie), Eric, John, William, Adelbert and Elrora. He was the oldest of the seven children.
