James Elihu was born on January 25th, 1813.  James Elihu's father was Isaac Oliver Fraley and his mother was Catherine Shoemaker.  His paternal grandparents were Frederick Fraley and Chloe M. Fraley; his maternal grandparents were James Shoemaker and Catherine Emerick. He had three brothers and six sisters, named Brittian, Isaac Shelby, Alexander, Patricia, Nancy Jane, Catherine, Elizabeth, Dinah and Fairlina.  He was the fourth oldest of the ten children.
