William E was born in 1829.1 William E's father was Thomas Madison Nickell and his mother was Barbara Gregory. His paternal grandparents were Jeremiah "Jerry" Nickell and Polly. He had three brothers and six sisters, named John A, Thomas Madison, Wesley L, Mary Evaline, Matsey Mahala, Eliza Jane, Rachel R, Celia E. and Sara M. He was the oldest of the ten children.-
