John A was born in 1836.1 John A's father was Thomas Madison Nickell and his mother was Barbara Gregory. His paternal grandparents were Jeremiah "Jerry" Nickell and Polly. He had three brothers and six sisters, named William E, Thomas Madison, Wesley L, Mary Evaline, Matsey Mahala, Eliza Jane, Rachel R, Celia E. and Sara M. He was the fourth oldest of the ten children.-
