Thomas was born on February 12th, 1802 in Elbert County, GA.1 Thomas' father was Benjamin Fortson and his mother was Elizabeth Gaines. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Fortson and Rachel Winn. He had two brothers and five sisters, and also two siblings of unknown gender, named Richard F., Benjamin G., Sarah, Maud, Rachel W., Elizabeth A., Amanda N. M., Easton and Mahala. He was the third oldest of the ten children. He had two half-brothers named James and John.1 -
