John was born on May 22nd, 1563 in Dunkeld, Perthshire, Scotland. John's father was John Stewart and his mother was Margaret+ Fleming. His paternal grandparents were John Stewart and Grizel Rattray; his maternal grandparents were Malcolm+ Fleming and Janet+ Stewart. He had a sister named Jean. He was the younger of the two children.
