His paternal grandparents were Christian Von+ Oldenburg and Agnes Von+ Honstein; his maternal grandparents were Gerard VI Von+ Holstein and Elizabeth+ Guelph. He had two brothers and a sister, named Mortitz V Von, Gerhard VI Von and Adelheid Von. He was the second oldest of the four children.
