John was born about 1550. John's father was Robert Maxwell and his mother was Beatrice Douglas. His paternal grandfather was Robert Maxwell and his paternal grandmother is Janet Douglas; his maternal grandparents were James Douglas and Catherine Stewart. He was an only child.
