Bertha's father was Pendelton Douglas 'PD' Preston and her mother was Sara Goodwin. Her paternal grandparents were Booker Preston and Louisa Asbury. She had four brothers and three sisters, named William Melvin, Carson, Carl R., Raleigh, Edith Evelyn, Gladys and Mary Frances. She had two half-brothers and three half-sisters, named Cecil Pendleton, Victor Eugene, Nella Cordalane, Elsa A. and Sarah Louise.-
