Joseph Markle Means 
Joseph Markle was born on June 14th, 1826 in Sewickley Twp., Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania.1 Joseph Markle's father was John Means and his mother was Susannah Whitesell. His paternal grandparents were Adam Means and Margaret Hutchinson; his maternal grandparents are Jacob Weitzel and Catherine Markley. He had five brothers and a sister, named Samuel Wiley, Courtney W., Jacob Whitesell, Lithgow, John Whitesell and Susan. He was the fourth oldest of the seven children. He died before 1910 in Sewickley Twp., Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania.1 General Notes

Joseph was educated in the public schools of his district in PA. Follo
wi ng in the footsteps of his father, he engaged in farming. He was dra
ft ed for service at the outbreak of the Civil War, but sent a substi
tu te in his place. He had a cousin; however, Captain Markle, who serv
ed thr oughout the war. In addition to his 6 children, Joseph adopted a
nd rais ed Daniel Pepper, who enlisted in the Union Army during the Civ
il War at t he age of sixteen, and served throughout.
