Her paternal grandfather was John Mitchell Keahey and her paternal grandmother is Amanda Pilcher. She had five brothers and five sisters, named John William, Thomas Marion, Jay Mitchell, Grover Patterson, Joseph Donald, Annie Laurie, Clara Mae, Jimmie Lee, Mattie Ruth and Nellie Jane.
