His maternal grandparents were Samuel Porter Hill and Pernecy Wheeler. He had six brothers and two sisters, named Earl Cranston, William Hill, Sr., Claude Eugene, Arthur Goodsell, Orley Kenneth, Austin Harrison, Thura Helen and Thelma Irene.
