His paternal grandparents were Jonathan Basham and Elizabeth Hogan. He had two brothers named Laura (Lizzie J) and Eliza H.. He was the second oldest of the three children. He had three half-brothers and a half-sister, named Mariah Bell, William Robert (Rob), George Verner and Florence Clemmie.
