NATHAN BASHAM
The first part of this story is family tradition which is usual
ly ma de up of several different stories merged into one over the year
s, we off er it because it might give someone a lead to their famil
y. It could be o nly a story or it could be partly true. Most genealogis
ts have found th at some family traditions are true enough to help us fi
nd our ancestors. A ccording to Basham family tradition, Nathan Basham w
as a native of Wale s, born around 1800 and originally named Thomas or Tho
mpson. As the tradi tion goes, he fled the law in Wales and changed his n
ame to avoid captur e. His girl friend, a Miss Lewis, also left Wales a
nd met him in Virgin ia where they were married.
They had at least one son, Nathan Basham Jr., born 21 July 1827 on B
ig Co al River. Nathan Basham Jr. married Missouri Jane, daughter of Jam
es Sr a nd Nancy Miller. Missouri was said to be the grandchild of an Indi
an Princ ess, named Nona or "Ninth Daughter."
Nathan Basham and two of his sons, James and William, served in the C
iv il War. Nathan was taken prisoner, had yellow fever and was shot in t
he h ead, carrying the scar until his death. They first moved to Sandy Ri
dg e, OH and then to East Bank, WV where Missouri Jane died in 1881. Na
th an was a Baptist minister who traveled from town to town to preac
h. In 19 00 he was living in Boone County with his son, Nathan. On 29 Ma
rch 19 04 he was killed by a train while walking on the railroad trac
k. Bo th he and Missouri Jane, along with several of their children, a
re buri ed in the McConnaly Cemetery at East Bank WV.
