Mary was born about 1762 in Black Water River, Bedford County, Virginia.1   Mary's father was Mitchel Clay and her mother was Phoebe Belcher.  Her maternal grandparents were RICHARD D. Belcher and MARY Obedience Clay. She had seven brothers and seven sisters, named Bartley, Ezekial, David Peyton, John, Mitchel, Charles L., William, Tabitha, Rebecca, Obedience 'Bedy', Patience, Naomie, Sarah and Polly.  She was the oldest of the fifteen children.  She died on April 25th, 1851 in Wyoming County, (West) Virginia.  She was buried in Craney near Oceana, Wyoming County, West Virginia.1 1

‌Mary and Ralph were married in a religious ceremony on June 25th, 1788 in Montgomery County, Virginia.1
