His paternal grandparents were DANIEL "Old Daniel" Maupin and MARGARET Via; his maternal grandfather was THOMAS Ballard and his maternal grandmother is FRANCES Shiflett. He had seven brothers and five sisters, named David Hansford, Daniel, Joel, Gabriel, Thomas, Bland, Matthew, Susannah, Judith, Frances "Fanny", Anna and Margaret "Peggy". He is the second youngest of the thirteen children.-
