His hair turned to a beautiful silvery white color. People would often ask him what he did to keep his hair so pretty. He walked with his head high. A friend, Callie Fleming, called him 'the colonel' , because of his presence. He loved his family, but he was a strict disciplinarian. He was sometimes hard on his children, especially Curry. He was always loving and kind to me. He loved to take vegetables to town and sell them. He also farmed and kept livestock. When he was 40, doctors told him that he would live only 6 more months, but he lived to be 89 years old. He was always plagued by drainage and a cough. The family tried to protect him from overexerting himself. He thought that his girls and his wife, and his granddaughter were the prettiest in the land. He would embarrass me at reunions by taking me around to the other families and saying, "Don't you think that she is the prettiest granddaughter here". He was hard of hearing, but he could hear everything that May said to him in her quiet, gentle voice. If she thought that he was out of line, she would say,"Why Robert". He would grin and stop teasing or whatever he was doing immediately. If he could not understand something that was being said, he would say,"May, come here I need you". May preceded him in death. The last words that he said before he died were, "Come on May, let's go home".
