Her paternal grandparents were Benjamin Henry HOWELL and Elizabeth BROOKS; her maternal grandfather was Isaiah MIDKIFF and her maternal grandmother is Mary Kimble. She had nine brothers and four sisters, named Haywood Benjamin, John Jamison, William Brooks, Thomas E., Wesley, George W., Andrew, Kimble Edegmond, Jefferson Metcalf, Mary, Elizabeth Brooks "Annie", Sarah J. and Nancy.
