Josiah was born in 1697 in Of Stonington, N.l., Ct and his baptism took place in First Church, Of New London, Ct. Josiah's father was John Or Jon AVERY and his mother was Abigail CHESEBROUGH. His paternal grandparents were James AVERY and Joanna GREENSLADE; his maternal grandparents were Samuel CHEESEBOROUGH and Abigail CHESEBROUGH. He had eight brothers and five sisters, named John, Benjamin, Joseph, Nathaniel, William, Elisha, Daniel, Thomas, Abigail, Mary, Elizabeth, Anna and Desire.
