Joseph was born on September 17th, 1743 in Cecil County, Maryland.1 Joseph's father was Joseph Wood and his mother was Sarah Hodgson. His paternal grandparents were Joseph Wood and Martha England; his maternal grandparents were Robert Hodgson and Sarah Hodgson Borden. He had a brother and two sisters, named Robert, Mary Green and Sarah. He had two half-brothers and five half-sisters, named Abraham, John, Catherine, Rachel, Rebecca, Ruth and Elisabeth.
