Eli Sabin 
Eli was born about 1804 in PA.1 Eli's father was David Sabin and his mother was Mary. His paternal grandparents were Joshua Sabin and Mary Sabin. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Male, David, Daniel, Physician Isaiah Evan, Benjamin Franklin, Female, Marian and Julianna. He was the third oldest of the nine children. [From Bio Memoirs of Blackford Co, IN] Referring to the Nov 1843 term of the
Superior Court of Blackford Co, "The Case of Eli Sabin vs. Sarah Sabin was
probably the first divorce case in the county. A divorce was granted to the
plaintiff." References: Land Records of Washington Co, PA. About 1839 Eli and
family moved from Washington Co, PA to Knox Co, OH. In Feb 1844 Eli bought
land from Michael & Julianna Geyer in Licking Twp, Blackford, IN and shortly
they moved to that location where they were enumerated in the 1850 federal
census as follows: Eli ae 46 Dr b PA, Eliza ae 26 b OH, David ae 19 farmer b
PA, Eli ae 14 b PA, Phebe ae 12 b PA, Tennessee ae 2 b OH. Subsequent to that
they rem. to Richland Co, WI where the town of Sabin was named for him. They
were also enumeratred in Union Twp, Vernon, WI in 1870 as well as Sylvan,
Richland, WI in 1880. He received a pension for service in the Civil War. Eli
and his wife Hannah sold land in PA to James Rogers on 16 Jan 1836. Some
researchers have said, and it is logical, that Eli became a doctor due to his
natural talent for administering to his neighbors in time of illness. He
probably learned "doctoring' by experience and did not have any special
education for the profession. The "Richland Rustic" published 5 Apr 1884
reports "William Powell Jr is studying to doctor under Dr. Sabin's tutorage. We
should think that he would come out well versed in his profession." Such
accounts provide substantiation that there were few, if any, regulatory law or
licensing in the medical profession before the turn of the century in WI and
that becoming a doctor was more or less "on-the-job" training.

Phoebe Ann was born on November 7th, 1835 in PA.1 She died at the age of 27 on February 25th, 1863 in Delaware Co, IN.1
