    Isaiah was born in Washington Co, PA in Nov 1817. He moved to Knox Co, OH
with his parents and other members of his family sometime after 1820 and before
1840.
    In the spring of 1840 Isaiah married Mary Dusky Campbell. The wedding was
held in the home of Mary's father, James Campbell of Newark, Licking Co, OH.
The census for 1840 lists James Campbell as a resident of Washington Twp.
    Isaiah and Mary went from OH to IA sometime between 1848 and 1850 with
their two children Mina Josephine and Isaiah Evan Jr. They are listed in the
1860 census as residents of Port Allen, Louisa Co. Isaiah was a physician and
enumerated as 41 years old. By this time they had four more children, Mosa
Teresa Victoria, Hannah and Jacob Jezereal (twins) and Beulah Hepzibah.
The Fork of the Rivers, a history and partial genealogy of Oakland & Orono Twps
and Louisa & Muscatine Counties by Mabel Estle Brown, states that, "The first
doctor to live in the fork of the rivers and practice was probably Isaiah E
Sabin, born 1814/1819 in OH and came to IA about 1849."
    On 12 Feb 1862 Isaiah enlisted in the US Army, to serve a term of three
years. He is described as 43 years old, six feet one inch in height, with dark
complexion, dark eyes and black hair. He wrote in a letter, now in his pension
files, that he weighed 180 pounds at that time.
    He was assigned to Co E, 16th Regt of the IA Volunteers, which fought in
the battle of Shiloh. While on the battlefield at Shiloh, Isaiah contracted
Typhoid Fever. It seems that from that point until he died, Isaiah did not live
another healthy day. He was discharged from the US Gen Hosp at Keokuk, IA on 30
Nov 1862.
    He was unable to work at his profession so, Isaiah was listed as a farmer
in the 1870 census. Letters in his pension file at the National Archives tell a
story of a long, hard fight to receive a pension. He was finally granted a
pension of six dollars a month in Aug of 1879.
    Isaiah's final days are told in a testimony written by a physician from
Muscatine Co, on 20 Jan 1880. He wrote that "in Jun of 1879 he was called to
attend Isaiah professionally and found him in a condition of anemia or general
debility with a chronic inflammation of the liver and indigestion." He wrote
that this condition continued until about Oct 10th when peritonitis was
"induced" and he died. According to a letter written by Mary Dusky, Isaiah died
at 2 p.m. on the 16th of Oct, 1879, at age 61 yrs and 11 months.
    Isaiah is buried in Forbes Cem located in Oakland, Louisa Co, IA. His
children, Hannah, Jacob, Galen O and Sacamp are buried with him.
